Policy recommendations

1. Move beyond GDP-based policymaking

GDP does not account for ecological and social costs. An alternative could be the Genuine Progress Index.

2. Drastically reduce wasteful resource use in wealthy countries

• Ban planned obsolescence and extend product lifespans
• Legislate longer product warranties
• Establish the right to repair
• End food waste
• Reduce single-use packaging
• Shift from ownership to use, e.g. in mobility
• Free public space from advertising
• Drastically reduce destructive and socially unnecessary industries

3. Shorten the working week

• Redistribute the current workload to maintain employment
• Raise hourly wages in line with living wage policy

4. Greater equality

Instead of the mantra of constant growth: we need to share what we have more fairly.

5. Debt cancellation

Cancel unrealistic and unjust debts that in today's model require constant economic growth due to interest.

6. Reform shareholder value rules

So that financial profit is not the top priority.

7. Set an income ceiling

To reduce inequality.

9. End subsidies for polluting industries

10. Support the solidarity economy

So that non-profit activities become more widespread.

11. Tax vacant residential and commercial spaces

Or hand them over to communities.

12. Establish an environmental budget

For example a carbon budget that sets an absolute permitted CO2 quantity.
